Lesson 5: Role and Persona

← Core Skills
← PreviousNext →

What you'll learn

Define who the AI should be and who the audience is so outputs have the right expertise and tone.

Why it matters

  • Role activates relevant knowledge and level of detail.
  • Audience drives communication style and jargon.
  • Vague roles produce generic or mismatched tone.

The rule

  • Use positive, specific role descriptors (domain + specialization).
  • Define the audience so the AI knows reading level and concerns.
  • Avoid generic roles like "You are helpful."

Bad vs better

Bad:

Explain our new security policy.

Better:

You are an internal communications specialist who translates technical policies for non-technical staff. Explain our new remote work security policy for sales and marketing: what they need to do, why it matters, and what happens if they don’t. Friendly, helpful tone; 3–5 practical examples.
