Lesson 2: Context and Constraints

← Core Skills
← PreviousNext →

What you'll learn

Provide the background and boundaries the AI needs so outputs are relevant and actionable.

Why it matters

  • Context turns generic answers into targeted solutions.
  • Constraints focus the AI on realistic, implementable options.
  • Missing context is one of the top causes of poor outputs.

The rule

  • Include situational, audience, and data context that would change the output.
  • State constraints: budget, timeline, scope, format, tone.
  • Omit context that would not change the result (keeps prompts efficient).

Bad vs better

Bad:

Analyze this sales data.

Better:

You are a sales operations analyst. Analyze Q4 2025 sales data vs. Q4 2024 and budget. Focus on revenue growth opportunities and underperforming segments. Output: executive summary with 3 insights and dollar-impact recommendations for the VP of Sales.

Copy/paste template

Copy/paste template
Context: [Who, what, when, why—what would a human need to do this well?]
Constraints:
- [Budget / timeline / scope / resources]
- [Format: length, structure]
- [Audience and tone]

Checklist

  • ✓Context answers: who is this for, what decision does it support?
  • ✓Constraints are explicit (budget, time, scope).
  • ✓No unnecessary context (ask: "Would output be worse without this?").
