Lesson 1: Writing Clear Goals

← Core Skills
Next →

What you'll learn

Define a single, measurable outcome per prompt so the model knows exactly what to produce.

Why it matters

  • One goal per prompt reduces ambiguity and off-topic answers.
  • Clear outcomes make it easy to judge success.
  • Iteration is faster when you change one variable (the goal).
  • Automation and users get consistent output shape.

The rule

  • One primary outcome per prompt.
  • State it in one sentence (e.g. "Summarize in 3 bullet points").
  • Prefer "do X" over "don't do Y."

Bad vs better

Bad:

Tell me about this document.

Better:

In 2–3 sentences, state the main decision or recommendation and the single most important reason.

Copy/paste template

Copy/paste template
Goal: [One sentence describing the exact output you want.]
Format: [e.g. 3 bullets / short paragraph / table.]
Length: [e.g. under 100 words.]

Checklist

  • ✓One primary goal per prompt.
  • ✓Goal is measurable (you can say "yes it did this" or "no").
  • ✓Format and length specified.
  • ✓No mixed goals (e.g. "summarize and also suggest follow-ups" in one ask).
  • ✓Wording is action-oriented ("Summarize…" not "I want something about…").
