Lesson 7: Chaining

← Core Skills
← PreviousNext →

What you'll learn

Break complex work into sequential prompts and pass outputs between steps instead of one giant prompt.

Why it matters

  • One prompt doing many things leads to shallow or incomplete results.
  • Chaining keeps each step focused and easier to debug.
  • You can reuse or swap individual steps.

The rule

  • One clear objective per prompt.
  • Chain steps: e.g. outline → draft → edit, or analyze → summarize → recommend.
  • Pass the previous step’s output as context to the next.

Bad vs better

Bad:

Write a blog post about cybersecurity, create social posts, draft an email, and suggest SEO keywords.

Better:

Step 1: Create an outline for a 1200-word blog on zero-trust for mid-market. Step 2: Using the outline, write the full post. Step 3: From the post, extract 5 LinkedIn posts with one insight and CTA each.

Copy/paste template

Copy/paste template
Step 1: [Single task and output format.]
Step 2: Using [Step 1 output], [next single task].
Step 3: From [Step 2 output], [final task].

Checklist

  • ✓Each step has one objective.
  • ✓Output of step N is input/context for step N+1.
  • ✓No step tries to do multiple unrelated tasks.
